The Capital Infrastructure program is responsible for construction projects involving City facilities. The program strives to maintain the City's infrastructure in as near original condition, and to expand or construct new infrastructure facilities when necessary.
These projects are administered by the City. However, the work is performed by outside contractors. All construction work is inspected to ensure compliance with City specifications. Click on the link to see updates of 2009 City Projects.
Citizen Notification of Public Improvement Projects
The City of Prairie Village prides itself on keeping citizens informed. The following is a brief synopsis of the notification process for property owners directly affected by construction:
Street Work, Storm Drainage and Concrete Repair Projects
Two weeks prior to construction beginning on the street via letter.
Forty-eight hours prior to any work on the property via door-hanger.
Slurry Seal Projects
Forty-eight hour notice via door-hanger.
Crack Seal Projects
Twenty-four hour notice via door-hanger.
Street Maintenance and Repair
The City's program emphasizes the prevention of road surface deterioration by filling cracks and sealing streets. As the road surface deteriorates, the surface is milled and replaced with new asphalt. When necessary, portions or the entire street is reconstructed.
The Public Works Department maintains an inventory of all of the City's infrastructure and their condition. Each year, one-third of the infrastructure is rated as to it's condition.
This inventory and condition rating system is utilized to determine what repairs should be made.
Storm Drainage
Like streets, the City also maintains a storm drainage system of inlets, pipes and channels. The drainage program is primarily for the repair/replacement of the existing system. On a specific case basis, new systems will be constructed after analysis of cost and benefit.
Concrete Repairs
Typical activities are repair of broken concrete in the City sidewalk and curb/gutter system. Maintenance on sidewalks includes grinding high spots less than one inch and temporary patches. Maintenance on curb/gutters will be temporary patched. Both sidewalks and curbs/gutters are replaced as part of the annual construction contract.
